Mina (Sarita Choudhury) is an Indian-American, the daughter of Indian-Ugandan immigrants chased from Uganda by the murderous regime of Idi Amin Dada.Demetrius (Denzel Washington) is a local African-American carpet cleaner. Both of them live with their respective families in the state of Mississippi and when Mina and Demetrius falls in love both families erupt in turmoil as ancient traditions comes face to face with the realities of the modern day and the unpredictability of falling in love.
