The American Civil War is raging, the Unions and the Confederates are at war. Captain Robert Gould Shaw (Mathew Broderick) is given command of the first all black regiment of the Army, the 54th Massachusetts.Hundreds of former slaves troop in, all of them eager to lend a hand in the fight for their freedom. But the men are a rabble and Captain Gould Shaw has a very hard task ahead to make them into an efficient and effective unit capable of winning battles and also able to gain the respects of white soldiers.
But there is a price to pay.
